Adjust Excel's Macro Command Security Settings

This page provides instructions about how to reduce the macro command security settings in Excel so that the macros that we use in our course spreadsheets will run on CWU networked computers.

Task Procedures
Set the security settings in Excel so that trusted macro commands run.

WARNING: Macro commands can be written as malicious code (e.g., see the Virus Encyclopedia). Consequently, CWU has set the security level of the MS Office applications to high to prevent all macros from running. You need to change that setting to medium every time that you work with macro commands. After doing so, you will be given an option to run macro commands in any files that you open that have them.

You should not run any macro commands if you do not know their source, but see the Windows Tip: Macro Security commentary at TechTV.

  1. Open Excel.
  2. On the menu bar, click on Tool-Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click on the Security tab, the click on the Macro Security button.
  4. Select Medium.
  5. Click OK twice to close the dialog box.
  6. Close Excel, then reopen Excel to put the new settings into effect.
