Objectives & Outcomes

The objective of this exercise is to help you learn how to create customized toolbars. Such toolbars provide quick access to the features and functions that you use most when working with Word.

At the end of this lab, you should be able to:

  1. Prepare a customized toolbar in Word that you can use in future assignments

  2. Take screen captures of your monitor's desktop

  3. Submit those screen captures as email attachments.

Prepare customized toolbars in Word
  1. Open a new file in Word.
  2. On the Word menu bar, click on Tools-Customize.
  3. In the Customize dialog box, click on the Toolbars tab.
  4. In the Toolbars list, select New and label your new toolbar in an appropriate manner- e.g., with your last name. Make the toolbar available in Normal.dot.
  5. In the Customize dialog box, select the Commands tab.
  6. In turn, select each of the Categories and drag the appropriate item from the Command to your new toolbar so that you replicate the toolbar below.
  7. Save your file to your network drive (or portable media) as 484Lab01.doc, but do not close it.
Take a screen capture of your work and submit it as an email attachment.

  1. In Word, right-click on the menu bar.
  2. Uncheck all of the toolbars except the toolbar that you prepared above.
  3. Place that toolbar immediately below the menu bars.
  4. Press the Ctrl-PrtScn keys simultaneously to capture a digital image of the display.
  5. On the Windows task bar, go to Start-Program-Accessories.
  6. Open up the Paint application.
  7. Press Ctrl-V to paste your digital image of the computer display.
  8. Save your file to your network drive (or portable media) as 484Word.jpg, but do not close it.
  9. On the Paint menu bar, select File-Send.
  10. Address the email to the course email address.
  11. Enter the subject: 484Hwk Word Toolbar.
  12. Send the email.
