Student Evaluations- Instructor's Questionnaire
Winter 2003

In what ways could the course instructor improve how he teaches the course?

I felt that the instructor taught effectively and graded fairly. The only problem I could see is if a student had difficulty accessing a computer.

I think it would be helpful to have quizes at the end of each chapter. It seemed that there was quite a bit of information between tests and I found myself a bit lost while studying.

There seems to be plenty of material to cover, so anything to save a little time might pay off. Maybe convert the crosswords to an online, submittable, fill in the blank form?

Possibly not teach the class at 8:25 Am, that is a back breaker. If this course was at 1:00 pm every day I think I would have done much better.

There should be more homework assignments done in class, not for points, but for learning guides. I beleive if we were presented with more homework spreadsheets, it would be very useful when it came to completing homework outside of class.

Nothing...I really enjoyed your teaching style and ways of learning. Thanks

maybe let students work through sample problems in groups and then have discussions based on those groups opinions and answers

The webquests were a little hard to figure out for a first time accounting student. It seemed like you expected us to assume a lot of things about the financial statements but we didn't know enough about them to know what to assume. It would help if you asked questions that we didn't have to make assumptions about. Those questions seemed like they were for upper level accounting majors.

There were too many emails about scholarships for accounting majors, you should ask students if they want to receive stuff like that. I had nearly five emails a day from you.

The multiple choice on the tests were worth way too many points and were extremely hard to understand.

maybe go a little slower.

Most people would agree your tests are difficult; possibly you should grade on a curve. For any student, as long as you study, you will understand and get good grades. Take Captain Ron, he's great.

I dont think there is anything Prof. Tidd could do to improve the teaching in ACCT 1. I was very surprised and impressed with how well the course was taught. Thank you for the great learning experience. Christian Branlund.

Explaining how you get the balance of a certain debt or credit would be more helpful. Also if you were to explain it in more than one way it would be more helpful.

I can't really think of anything that could improve Prof Tidd's teaching. Maybe explaining the ratio's a little better and spending a little more time on them would be helpful.

I would suggest having classes only one hour long, as an hour and a half started to wear down on me. Call me lazy, impatient, or whatever, but even with the days off, I found myself not wanting to sit through the long class, and would sometimes daydream, which led to me missing out on important material. I would also suggest telling everyone where to find the next day's excell sheets so we could print them out and use them in class...I saw people using them, but I didn't know where to get them. Other than that I thought this class was solid.

im not a teacher

nothing really

I can't really think of any areas that need improvement. I find his teaching style very effective and I wish more intructors taught similarly.

I think the class is fine the way it is.

Since the mean was not very high on tests, I think curves would be something to consider. I also think on the web quests, you should make the link to financial statements present, instead having us hunt around the website to find the financial statements section.

Give a brief overview of excel for those students who are not familiar with the program. I learned by watching how to use the equations in the worksheets, such as adding and subtracting cells, but I did not how to do this before the class. A quick 10 minute overview on this would help. That's it everything else was great!!

I thought the class was well taught and easy to understand. I wouldn't change anything.

He could have made powerpoints less wordy. While lecturing, he could be a little less monotone sounding.

I think it was very effective, I think it would be a little more effective if was done in a computer lab. That way when the practice exercises are done, then the students can do it as they go over it in class, that way they have a little bit better understanding of whats going on.

A little more patients with those of us who just don't get it would be nice. Being made an ass of because we don't get things is embarassing. Though you may not see if as making an ass of us, but i personally am uncomfortable being called on in class and don't respond well. i can concentrate better in class if i know that the teacher WILL NOT call on me. otherwise, i'm always wondering if he's gonna call on me and if i'm going to be able to answer the question or look like a dumbass.

Teach a class that is not so long, but then again you probably have no control over that.

I would wait to teach the first ratios before the first webquest. I found the first ratios the most confusing and most difficult to grasp because of that.

Take the begining part of the class slower because that is the basis of the whole course and if that part is missed then the whole quarter will not make sense.

toward the end of the quarter you started speeding up your lectures a lot, i'm not sure if this was because you knew you were running out of time, or because you thought we could grasp it that fast. i think the last few chapters moved to fast, and i found it difficult to fully gather all of the ideas in lecture.

When I performed the WebQuests, I knew it would be very useful information to know and to use in the future. However, doing the Webquests and then not following up on it with later assignments didn't allow for fluency in such information gathering. I would suggest applying Webquests that built up on each other so that you wouldn't forget the earlier ones.

The only thing I see being more helpful to the students. If didn't send information by e-mail, but by AIM or MSN. It would be more effective way of helping anyone trying to slove homework problem, beacuse when you trying doing some of homework problems alone. Your mind sometimes didn't anyways get what discuss in class and can come confusing. Also, maybe a study group to focus more help on solving situation in the problems and better understanding of the text.

I really don't think he could change how he teaches the course. I mean, I didn't necessarily like his personality, but it doesn't matter because if I was taking his class for a judge of personality I might as well dislike most of my Professors. I took his class to learn, and that his exactly what happened, I learned a lot. He was very organized and I think his computer based curriculum really made everything organized and not so confusing, unless students didn't know how to use the computer, but then he always was willing to help you if you didn't understand how to use the tools he was using on the computer.

Maybe make a place where the students can gather online and ask questions to each other to see if they are having the same problem and what they did to fix them.. Out of the classes I have taken at CWU both upper level and lower level, it was extremely well structured and Im not to sure as to where you could improve how you taught the class.. You had assignments that with the exception of the crosswords werent busy work. You applied what we were learning to life outside the text book. You gave examples other than what the book gave, you explained things differently than the book did. You showed us different ratios that you thought were useful, and they were. You took out the long written out process of the book's homework and incorporated it into a spreadsheet, that you could easily see where the numbers were going and explained itself. Good Job.. Two thumbs up.. I wish you were teaching 252.

I can't think of anything.

Get a new book, it sucks... and Don't try so hard to trick everyone. Is that the point of the class?
