Student Evaluations- Instructor's Questionnaire
Summer 2002

In what ways could the course instructor improve how he teaches the course?

The only thing I would have to say is to have a handout that explains a little about the excel functions students need to know for this class. If the handout had steps or examples of how to get started with working with some of the functions on excel it would really help students. Other then that I feel Ron gave us a great quarter in all the information he provided.

I honestly don't feel that any improvement needs to be made. I think the course was great, and I'd recommend this instructor to anyone taking accounting classes.

Explain how more complicated material is presented on the tax return. Also discuss material in class well in advance before making it due. Also, not making an assignment due on the last day of class and on a Friday,(Class is over)Also making assignments due on the days we have class instead of making them due on odd days this made it difficult to keep track of assignments and created a little more stress that I actually needed or wanted.

Power point class notes are very nice idea, however, sometimes it is difficult to read them because of the size of font. So, if you could make slides a little bit bigger font or different size, that would be great because we as students will have no difficulties to see them in the lecture.

The excel spreadsheets were hard to use for two reasons. I did not have enough specific background in excel, though I had used it in other classes. The spreadsheets did not look or relate to anything in the book, so there was not the familiarity and repitition that most people require to learn. I would have learned more about how to do the excel problems if there were similiar examples with formulas that were required for the exercises that I could refer back to to complete the homework. There are far fewer resources off campus for help. Remember, too, that distance ed students are usually older and work full time, so if power point slides go on the web site after 7 or 8 in the morning for that evening's 5:30 class, many of us go directly from work to school and are not able to get home to check the site. Twenty-four hour's notice is really helpful.

The excel spreadsheets would be no problem in an on campus class, but at distance ed sites the students are often older, working full time, and do not have access to help with excel. How about offering an online class in excel for accounting and finance majors?

Once again, I still say the crossword puzzles are not that helpful. Other then that I personally feel the instructor did a great job in teaching this course.

I wanted him to give us homework earlier. Because we need time to think carefully.

I believe that the instructor could improve on the course by giving quizzes. By having quizzes it would have made me learn the material better. I do believe I accomplished what the instructor had set out for his goals, “get the major concepts down” but I do not fell as if I gained a lot of knowledge from the text. There was so much information in the text I feel the class just skimmed the surface of that information. Quizzes would not have given the class more information but it would have reinforced the information that the instructor felt was important.

It would be helpful if the spreadsheet assignments were consistently reliable. By that I mean, I feel like I wasted a lot of time trying to make some of them work when there was something missing, or something wrong to start with. I also think there may have been a little too much downloading extra materials. Some days I felt like I needed an hour of office busy work just preparing extra things to bring to class.

I have only taken one class from Ron and I feel that his teaching methods were adequate for the course material. He provided powerpoint presentations for visual learners such as myself along with assignments that were conducted outside of class - this allowed for full lecture during the class time.

I feel that you did very well. The only problem I found was hearing the students talking from your site and you on occasion.
