Student Evaluations- Instructor's Questionnaire
Fall 2003

In what ways could the course instructor improve how he teaches the course?

SUA whould have provided additional clarification on separation of duties and procedures if it was done in groups and each student played a part. Also, more instruction on Websites (if this is a IT course). Or stop at the presentation.

It has been beaten in our heads throughout college.... "clear and concise." I can't tell you how many times that I talked with classmates about how ambiguous Ron can be. All too often I would turn in homework and he would tell us afterwards that he expected the homework in "some format." You should do a better job of making students aware of your expectations ahead of time and not dock them for your shortcomings.

Make sure the students know what is expected on all the assingnments and not have any surprises come grade time.

My biggest disappointment in any course is an assignment of a group project, especially when the course is an evening DE course. The students who enroll in evening DE courses are typically adult learners with full-time jobs and families. Finding the time to meet with other group members is often more a challenge than the actual assignment. Learning how to work with others is certainly an objective of these type of assignments, but I have yet to have instructor facilitate or even teach about the process and practice of groups.

THE MAIN PROBLEM THAT I SAW WITH THE COURSE WAS IN THE PRESENTATION THAT THE DISTANCE SITES RECEIVED. THE OPERATOR OF THE CAMERA WOULD PUT THE CAMERA ON THE DOCUMENT AND LEAVE IT. THERE WAS VERY LITTLE VISUAL CONTACT AND THEREFORE IT SEEMED TO DRAG ON. IT SEEMS THAT THERE SHOULD BE A WAY TO SEE THE PROFESSOR AT THE SAME TIME AS THE DOCUMENT. SOMETIMES DISTANCE COURSES ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO FOLLOW AND THERE WERE TIMES THAT WE JUST DIDNT HEAR WHAT WAS GOING ON.

The course can be improved by providing examples of what to do. The instructor has a good idea of what he wants but does not always convey that message effectivley. If he needs something in some appropriate format or done a certain way he should give the format or an example of it.

I could have used a LOT more guidance on the SUA assignment. Maybe the instructor could assign the SUA assignment as a group assignment instead of an individual assignment.

For those of us who had no clue as to go about putting a web page together or hanging it on the internet there wasn't enough instruction to make any sense of it to us. The resources and tools offered didn't make sense to anyone in our group and we felt we had to ask a lot of questions.

The last two weeks of the course were a little boring. Since there was no test at the end of the quarter there wasn't much incentive to show up. I did show up out of fear that Ron would add some additional points that I'd otherwise miss out on, but the time was spent completing other tasks rather than following the lecture. I'm not suggesting that there needs to be a final exam, but rather something structured that requires attendance or penalizes those that do not attend.

Make sure everyone is receiving your emails. Double checking your lists or having everything available on your web page would be helpful to students.

Ron is very organized and utilizes his web pages to inform students of information relevant to the course. At times, I did find myself somewhat confused regarding the arrangement of certain handouts and materials. In particular, the Power Point slides that are used during his lectures--which are a great idea--were difficult to correspond with chapters in the textbook. A couple of times I was not sure what chapter we were discussing in class. In the end, it was not a major problem but could be something he could take a look at for future courses.
