Student Evaluations- Instructor's
Questionnaire
Spring 2002
In what ways could the course instructor improve how he teaches the course?
I don't feel the text book was necessary to the course. I learned everything that was required through your lectures and available material. The text book was only useful when it came to the crosswords and even though these assignments did help me to grasp the terminology, I would never pay 60+ dollars for that limited knowledge. If there is another way to use the book or learn the terminology it would be great. The class is so web-based that it almost seems unecessary to have the book in the first place. I would also suggest that more time be spent on the explanation and teaching of the SUA assignment. I felt this was a valueable assignment but I was often confused and felt unprepared for the amount of work required.
I think there could be a few different things done, the SUA was a good idea and it totally gave you an idea of how it worked but we never went over it in class or saw what we were doing wrong and that sort of thing. I think this course should use more computer programs, I thought it was an information systems course and would use more of what I would when I got out there, but I have the same skills as I did when I started the course. Also, I think the web-quests and crosswords were a good idea but there were so many of them I feel I rushed through them and the other assignments. Sometimes when I was doing the assignments I was completely lost and feel that I got bad grades on them because I didn't really know what you wanted for an answer, even the ones I thought I did right got scores of 5-7. I also think we should have had more of a class work environment, we never really did anything in class only out of and that takes a lot of extra time when we could have used some of the lecture time to do our work and understand it more, because we did have lecture notes available. Also, the group assignment was really hard, maybe it should be more individual. I felt that with my group it was so hard to meet. Not one of us had the same schedule. I had to work and everyone seemed to have other things going on when one could meet, so I think more class time for that would have made a huge difference on our performances. But, anyways, thanks for your time and have a good summer.
a lot more explanation could have been provided on the SUA assignments. It had been almost two years since i had been in an accounting course, and some things i had forgotten. Basically, that was one of the things that killed my grade in this class.
I think he was excellent.
I found the crosswords to be a complete waste of time. We did not learn the definitions, just how to skim the glossary for key words until you found the correct item. I feel that our expectations regarding the presentations were not clearly stated. We thought our powerpoint presentations were supposed to be a brief summary of our topic and only 10 minutes long. We thought we were supposed to just briefly touch on each topic to let you know that we had started exploring the topic. Then after we were done, the first comment from you was that you wanted more information. I also felt very afraid to ask questions in class, because I felt they would be followed by a "well that was a stupid question" and more mocking. I think everyone understood and enjoyed your sense of humor and would appreciate it on a 1-to-1 basis, but it was hard to be made fun of in front of a whole class of your peers.
I Like the web site for looking up assignments and stuff. My major complaint is that sometimes schedules and assigment dates were changed at 9:00 on the day of the class. This method only rewards the people who wait until the last minute. Plus in my day I can check the web site before class so I never knew about the changes. I might also better plan out the SUA assignment. IT was a good exercise but not as well thought out as it might have been
I think that you should tone down your intensity a little bit. You were really, really intimidating at the beginning of the quarter; even though you warned all of us at the beginning of the quarter, we were still a bit unprepared for your cynicism. It would also be nice if you could tone down the cynicism to the accounting profession a bit; pretty much anyone who takes your classes is headed straight for public accounting, and at times your cynic attitude toward the whole thing was disheartening. Also, sometimes I felt that you made jokes that you thought were funny at others' expense who didn't appreciate it. At first that really ticked me off. But then I got to know you and realize that that's just your way--however, not all your students are going to take the time to get to know you...which might make your job hard if they complain all the time. I didn't like you at all until I talked to you one-on-one, to be completely honest. You are a very proactive instructor as far as student involvement goes--this is a good thing that I forgot to mention before!!!
- do not offer this course in a 2 hour block format meeting two days a week. - give more direct answers to student questions - change the criteria for the top tech issues report. This should not be the main final for the course. its important to recognize the new technologies as they emerge throughout time, but unfortunately by the time that the topic has been discussed in a presentation, its usually not a top issue anymore. a suggestion could be a test of some sort as the main final, but the tech issue report being just a side note. - the sua, although an effective way to teach accounting students how things are in the real world does only one thing: make students wish they were able to use technology to solve problems.
The Crosswords seemed to help but only minorly, I think a more comprehensive assignment might prove more effective. Maybe some form of multi-choice web quiz, using java, visual basic or other scripting language could make them self grading and importable into a spreadsheet, or Data Base.
USE Less humor. I know that you think your funny, but appriently from the email that you sent to us last week some people find you very sexist, which I honestly thought was true as well. I think that you could use fewer powerpoint, I am buried in powerpoints from all my other classes, I don't really want to be buried with them in my accounting class as well. It would be helpful to have both powerpoint, and more active learning, such as more questions dealing with the text to ensure that students are reading. I didn't read hardly at all, that was because you seemed to place so much emphasis on powerpoint that I just basically ignored the text.
The SUA really sucked, and I never felt sure if I was doing the assignment right. Perhaps explain what needs to be done, and how to accomplish it would allow people to get more out of it.
I think some of the students felt that they were singles out and that there was discimination based on sex. I don't totally agree or disagree. I think that if Ron didn't single out students they would have enjoyed the class a lot more. However, part of the reason I liked the class was because of the chance of being "picked on". I like classes that encourage student to express themselves and this class did that.
The amount of homework was too much. The crossword puzzles and web quests were not really that effective in my opinion. They were more busy work then anything else. The SUA assignment was a good way to go through the different steps, especially when it came to internal control issues.
The power point slides were a little long and hard to follow at times. The e-mail that was sent throughout the course became a little cumbersome. Yes, the use of e-mail was helpful at times, but the multiple e-mails received in a day were a little much. I think there was a little too much busy work at times, I feel that the web quests were useful because I learned a lot of useful internet sources for information, but the cross words were a little much, and maybe not so necessary.
Ron, I really expected something different from this course. Here are some suggestions. 1. The Webquests, homework problems, and the crossword puzzles were basically busy work. 2. The SUA would have been more meaningful if we had some lab time during class to work on it. 3. The 150 pt. project needs more input by you and clearly explained. From the other students that I have talked with, they are as confused as I am to want you want to see in this project. I would rather have a final. 4. The powerpoint is nice, but boring. I can read the slides myself. 5. I am not sure why I paid $80.00 for a book. If you want students to pay that much than you should use it more. 6. I am not sure what happened towards the end of the quarter with your change in attitude, but it is alot nicer when you smiled and joke around some. 7. Please do not continue to call fellow students "stupid" or put someone down in your e-mails, it is embarrassing for them and the rest of us. Also, it is not very professional. The sad thing is that by doing those things you turned alot of students off and it became a stuggle to go to class. 8. You are an intelligent man and alot to offer to the profession, but again you need to learn how to work and talk with students!!
It is a great way to use powerpoint slides to assist lecture. However, sometimes, you put too much information within one slide. I felt that all information were on the slide( this may be not really true sometimes), so I did not have to take note. I know this is wrong. You may have more blank space to let students to make own notes.
Don't be too serious! Get closer to students. Maybe open-book exams!:)
