Student Evaluations- Instructor's
Questionnaire
Spring 2003
In what ways could the course instructor improve how he teaches the course?
I was most frustrated on those occasions when the instructor would ask a question in class which could be answered from many various perspectives, and it was never clear which he was looking for. It was apparent he wanted something specifically, but an otherwise appropriate response might be nowhere near where he is headed. As I considered this, I realized that there is no easy answer to this problem, as he would pretty much have to give the answer to be specific enough to erase this ambiguity. This was not a situation where the student would get his/her head bit off if they weren't on the same wavelength as the instructor, and I got the impression that regardless of what answer was given, he'd help you get back to where his attention was focused. At times, the course material seemed repetitive. As an example, the details of cryptology came up at different times. While it is relevant to various different topics, the detail with which it was reexplained seemed excessive and unnecessary. It would have sufficed to say "here's cryptology again.. you learned how this worked earlier". I think to some degree the reason for this is the similarity of this course and 565 and the instructor's uncertainty about whether he thoroughly covered a topic in one course or the other.
