Facts

Through the advancement of scientific research methods and the pervasive use of the Web for ebusiness, organizations have started to collect vast quantities of data. They now face the challenging of converting that data into information and knowledge that will help a given organization fulfill its mission.

Generally, such a conversion requires a significant investment in IT resources, notably fast hardware that can run sophisticated software that analyzes the data and searches for relationships and trends. Few organizations could afford that investment, so contracting with third parties is a viable alternative, as is using otherwise idle IT resources (i.e., desktop computers) to perform the analysis. Special software is used to connect idle PCs into a grid, such that the combined power of those PCs is equivalent to the power of a super computer. Thus, an organization is able to increase its return on investment in the PCs used by shift workers and the data collected in its operations.
