Course Objective
Our primary objective in this
course is to introduce you to the concepts, technologies, techniques, and issues
associated with information security in a networked digital environment and
responses to incidents in which that security is compromised. Our emphasis will be on the role that accountants
might play in:

Assessing the vulnerabilities and risks associated with
networked digital systems (i.e., networked IT/IS resources)
-
Managing those risks and resources by implementing
cost-effective security
-
Detecting the inappropriate use of network resources
-
Responding to incidents of inappropriate use.
Our secondary objective is to
help you develop the skills, knowledge, and professional orientation that
supports the life-long learning effort that is essential to your career.
At the end of this course, you should be able to:

Explain the accountant's role as an information professional
with respect to assessing, designing, and
implementing cost-effective security strategies for network resources.

Identify and describe the main components of personal
computers and digital networks and how they work.

Explain how network resources can be used as the target of or
tool of malicious activity.

Secure a personal computer by implementing appropriate
security policies and procedures.

Use the appropriate basic tools to investigate
inappropriate activities and criminal behavior.

Explain the rules of evidence and the laws that might be used
to prosecute the misuse of network resources.

Explain the accountant’s role as an expert witness.
-
Know how to engage in continuous learning that is necessary to
remain an effective professional.
