TAXES Technology Column April 2002- Privacy Practices and Policies: Protection and Confidence in a Networked Environment Privacy moved from tenth to fourth on the AICPA’s Top Technologies Issues list from 2000 to 2001. Prior to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the U.S. Congress was considering at least 29 privacy-related bills, many of which had provisions related to online privacy. Privacy was a hot issue in the environment of networked computers and online activity. Since the attacks it has become a boiling issue. More than 200 pieces of legislation have been introduced, many of which have provisions that will affect privacy, both online and offline. The debate about privacy has intensified: At least one pundit believes that it is one of the ten forces that will affect the the Internet’s evolution. The purpose of this column is to examine the privacy issues related to the use of networked computers that are connected to the Internet. This approach reflects that tax professionals (and the clients that they advise) must address privacy issues with respect to both clients (customers) and employees. As always, the column and the author’s web site (www.rrtidd.com/TaxesRef.htm) include links to the relevant Internet resources. Referenced URLs
