TAXES Technology Column

February 2002- The Deep Web: Finding the Internet's Buried Treasure

The Web continues to attract attention. It is a center centerpiece for two applications listed in the AICPA’s Top Technologies (www.toptentechs.com/applications/): Web-based applications (number 1) and Web-enabled applications (number 4). It is also on the periphery on many other items in those lists and it has an overwhelming amount of content. According to the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC; http://wcp.oclc.org/) there were 4.7 million unique web sites on the Internet when it conducted its research of the Web’s 1999 characteristics. The results for 2001 indicate that there are now around 8.4 million unique web sites. Thus, there has been a net gain of around 3.7 million pages and a net growth of about 220% since web-based tax resources were discussed in this column last. Certainly there is some new content that tax professionals will find useful somewhere in that additional volume.

The purpose of this month’s column is to update previous articles on searching the web and on web-based resources for tax professionals. The discussion includes what is now being referred to as the “deep Web”- a portion comprising specialized and searchable databases.
